As I’ve been digging into my own thyroid and adrenal health for the past several months, given a cluster of symptoms I’ve been experiencing that I know are associated with thyroid gland function and adrenal gland function (particularly that of our stress hormone, cortisol), I was intrigued with what she would have to say about these topics! The episode propelled me into obtaining some lab testing and further supporting myself in the ways necessary at this time.
Episode #241 takes you into Aviva’s fascinating life, from growing up in poverty, to becoming “a Yale-trained, board-certified family physician with a specialty in integrative women’s health and obstetrics, a mid-wife, and an herbalist.”[i] She is also “referred to as ‘the face of natural medicine in the 21st century’ by Prevention magazine.[ii]
As soon as I finished listening to this episode, I had to get my hands on a copy of The Adrenal Thyroid Revolution, STAT!
It was one of those reads that, now that I’ve read once, I’ll definitely need to read again. In a nutshell, here are some key topics it addresses:
The role of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) Axis in the body
*The HPA Axis is the body’s central response system to stress, as part of the body’s Glandular/Endocrine System
*The adrenal glands are tiny glands that sit atop the kidneys and produce several hormones, including that of the stress hormone, cortisol
The opportunity to evaluate whether you are in what she refers to as “SOS” – chronic, survival mode (whether it be that of overdrive, or exhaustion)[iii]
The Five Root Causes of Adrenal and Thyroid Dysfunction[iv]
*These root causes encompass chronic emotional and mental stress, sensitivities to particular foods, imbalances in the gut, an overload of toxins in the body, and infections (typically viral) that have come to result in your Immune System becoming chronically elevated[v]
Checklists (initial screening tools) for each of the ‘Five Root Causes’, so that you may help pinpoint WHICH root cause most accurately reflects what you’re presently experiencing and provide yourself targeted support as a result
Aviva then offers what she calls The SOS Solution - an opportunity to:
Lastly, this literature provides:
A pinpointed grocery shopping list to target those foods that will most support your thyroid and adrenal health
Numerous recipes to try that encompass breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks and desserts
Relevant lab tests to complete, including testing for the various 5 ‘Root Causes’ identified above
Strategies for working with health practitioner, including locating the most fitting ‘alternative’ practitioner for your needs and goals
Now that I’ve read this literature once, I look forward to reading it a second time, filling out the various questionnaires and gaining some additional screening support for myself to support the avenues I’ve already pursued. I look forward to discovering new things and confirming those diet, supplement and lifestyle strategies I have already adopted.
