Banana-Tahini Smoothie

August 31, 2016

I wasn't quite sure what to expect when I came across a recipe for a smoothie involving tahini, ground turmeric and ground black pepper!  Was I ever glad I tried it out!  This recipe is incredibly delicious and nutrient-dense, and has now become one more go-to smoothie in my breakfast smoothie rotation.  It's important to eat a rainbow of food colours; this sunshine-yellow concoction is no exception and starts a fresh day off right!

 Recipe source: Alive Magazine

Yield: 1 serving

1 cup unsweetened plain or vanilla almond milk

(I used homemade, unsweetened almond milk)

1 banana, fresh or frozen

2 soft, Medjool dates, pitted and torn

1 tbsp. tahini (sesame seed paste)

1/4 tsp. vanilla extract

1/4 tsp. ground cardamom

1/4 tsp. ground turmeric

1/8 tsp. ground black pepper

A few ice cubes, if needed (if banana was not frozen)

Combine all ingredients in a blender, in the order listed.

Blend on high until smooth and creamy, adding additional almond milk if a thinner drink is desired.

Serve immediately.  Enjoy!

About Tahini:

  • Is sesame seed paste

  • “Unhulled” sesame seeds/tahini will be more nutrient-rich yet more bitter,

  • “Hulled” sesame seeds/tahini will contain less calcium, due to the hull/outer coating of the seed being removed

  • Is rich in dietary fiber

  • Rich in calcium, copper, iron, lecithin, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin (vitamin B1), selenium and zinc

About Turmeric:

  • Turmeric’s main, active ingredient, curcumin, is a powerful anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticancer agent, fighting free radicals that cause cellular damage in the body[i]

  • Turmeric is effectively used for arthritis, stomach pain, diarrhea, intestinal gas and bloating of the stomach; it is ideal for inflammatory bowel diseases[ii]
