Sprouting seeds at home is far easier than you may think, and given that spring is (hopefully!) just around the corner, sprouting is on my mind!
Sprouting requires just a few basic items and may occur using a few different methods. The method I'm illustrating below involves a nut/seed milk bag (available at your local health food store for a nominal cost), a mason jar,and your package of organic seeds of choice, of course!
Once you get the process rolling with the initial hours of soaking the seeds, the daily process in nurturing the seeds to becoming fully sprouted just involves regularly rinsing the seeds and letting nature work its magic!
How do I do this?
*I typically start this process during an evening, so that the initial soaking may occur overnight and so I may easily stay on track with a daily routine with the seeds.
Step 1: Measure two tbsp. of seeds and place them in the nut/seed milk bag. Then, place the nut/seed milk bag in a mason jar and submerge the seeds with room-temperature water.
Step 2: The next morning, remove the bag from the mason jar and rinse out the jar. Keeping the seeds in the bag, gently and thoroughly rinse the seeds with warm water (I typically stretch open the top of the bag and gently move the sprouts through my hand to ensure the water is thoroughly rinsing them). The consistent rinsing that will occur each day will assist in preventing any mould from developing, because nobody wants that! Gently squeeze the bag to wring out any excess water, before placing the nut/seed milk bag back in the mason jar. The mason jar will no longer be filled with any water.
*Rinse the seeds, in the same manner, once again that afternoon and evening. By the end of this first 24-hour period you should notice small tails sprouting. Exciting!
Step 3: The following day, rinse the seeds in the morning, afternoon and evening once again. By the evening of this second full day (about 48 hours into the process), the seeds should really be starting to sprout:
Step 4: The following day, rinse the seeds in the morning, afternoon and evening once again. By the evening (about 72 hours into the process), the tails should appear even slightly longer:
I chose to let the sprouting process continue for one more day following the above-noted progress, as this process may range from 3-5 days in length.
Step 5: The following day, rinse the seeds in the morning. If they have already reached the point of being fairly sprouted (mine had), lay the seeds out on a cookie sheet or cutting board lined with paper towel to air dry throughout the day. Replace the paper towel as needed, to ensure proper drying occurs.

Step 6: That same evening (about 96 hours in), once dry, the sprouts may be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. You may certainly line the airtight container with a paper towel, if desired. Try to consume your fresh sprouts within 3-5 days, whether it be in sandwiches, on salad, or otherwise!
