Local Goodness on Bruny Island!

Great Bay, Bruny Island - Oyster Fishing Territory

There are no words to describe the seclusion and untouched wilderness of Bruny Island, Tasmania, Australia! Bruny Island contains "some of Tasmania's most beautifully preserved natural environments with abundant wildlife and stunning clifftop views."[i] This was certainly the case as it was explored today!

Approximately 100 km from its northernmost to southernmost points[ii], it's an ideal day trip filled with the magic and enchantment of its rugged landscape and the freshest air I think I'll ever smell! An absolute escape from day-to-day life for all you wilderness and local food seekers out there!

With a population of approximately 600 people, the island is divided into a northern and southern aspect, connected by that of The Neck, where you may climb a few hundred stairs to a lookout for unforgettable views!

A memorable stop on this island was that of the Bruny Island Cheese Co., where locals and visitors can enjoy a variety of sustainably-made, freshly-baked breads and locally-made cheeses, among other items made with pride and love!

Personally, my mouth was watering for the cascade of goodness found inside; raw honey, mustard, vinegars, salad dressings, looseleaf teas, and the list goes on and on! In the perfect world, and if I were closer to home and not concerned with packing space, I would have taken one of everything with me! Like everything else in Australia, I just can't get enough of the culinary scene and locally-produced food!

I'll let you now experience the mouth-watering, as you scroll through the images below!

BRUNY ISLAND BERRY FARM

This spacious plot of land has been passed down through the same family since settlement on the island back in 1880.[iii] Visitors can pick their own berries, and there's no shortage of variety to choose from, including:

Strawberries - the only fruit where its seeds are found on its outside; are actually not berries - are part of the rose family! Strawberries are rich in both vitamin C and folate[iv]

Raspberries - are also an excellent source of vitamin C![v]

Blackberries - a rich source of vitamins C and E, as well as folate[vi]

Boysenberries - a cross between the loganberry, blackberry and raspberry; rich in vitamin C and fiber[vii]

Blueberries - these thornless shrubs can survive for up to 30 years, or more![viii]

Youngberries - named after B.M. Young, a fruit grower of the 1900s; while they resemble Boysenberries in appearance, but are a cross between a blackberry and dewberry[ix]

Jostberries - a cross between a black currant and gooseberry; a rich source of vitamin C[x]

Bruny Island is pretty special! Definitely a must-see if ever traveling to Tasmania!
