Cinnamon-Spiced Chaga Elixir
With chilly days, windy days and the odd snow-filled day now being the norm, I can't help but feel the need to cozy up with a hot elixir! Hot beverages are always comforting! With the homemade elixir combinations I love to experiment with, particularly on the weekends, half the fun is its creation! They certainly are filling and fuelling in more ways than one!
I consider an elixir, in the context of culinary nutrition, to be a strategically-crafted beverage (enjoyed hot, or chilled) that is nutrient-dense and therapeutic in nature. Each of the ingredients has health-promoting benefits. The majority of the ingredients are typically items that are staples in my pantry; the star ingredient, in this case the Chaga Mushroom Elixir powder, is an item I'll treat myself to every now and then!
The Four Sigmatic Chaga Mushroom Elixir is an immune-boosting, antioxidant-rich and earthy combination. While you can purchase the packets in boxes of 20 packets, I also find them sold as individual packets at my local health food stores - Community Natural Foods and Blush Lane Organic Market. They typically sell for a few dollars per packet. This option comes in handy, as it allows me to experiment with this company's different products in small amounts at a time, so as to discover what I enjoy most (I enjoy them all!).
According to the Four Sigmatic website, the Chaga extract used is that of organic, dual-extracted, wild-crafted, Siberian Chaga Mushroom. 1 packet “Four Sigmatic” Chaga Mushroom Elixir
1 cup boiling water
1 tbsp.-sized chunk raw cacao butter (or 1 tbsp. coconut oil)
1 tbsp. raw cacao powder
2 tbsp. hemp seeds
1 tbsp. raw, unpasteurized honey (optional – to sweeten)
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. slippery elm bark powder
1. Dissolve the contents of the Chaga Mushroom Elixir powder in 1 cup/mugs-worth of boiled water.
2. Add 1 tbsp.-sized chunk of raw cacao butter (if using coconut oil, add coconut oil in Step #4).
3. Once the raw cacao butter has had a chance to fully melt, give the mixture a stir and pour it into a high-speed blender.
4. Add the remaining ingredients to the blender and blend until smooth.
5. Garnish with some added cinnamon, if you so desire! Enjoy!
About the Remaining Ingredients:
Raw cacao butter is the fat or oil of the cacao bean; the raw cacao butter pictured above was processed at a low temperature, so as to maintain the integrity of the oil
Raw cacao powder is a good source of plant-based saturated fat; fat is required in the body for a multitude of reasons, including for optimal brain and Central Nervous System function, cell communication, protection of organs from trauma and temperature change and for transport of fat-soluble vitamins throughout the body
Raw cacao powder is unrefined; it is a rich source of the magnesium (the anti-stress mineral), supportive of muscle relaxation and energy production, among a number of other functions in the body
Raw cacao powder is also a good source of both iron and zinc; iron supports red blood cell production and oxygenation to the muscles, energy production and the metabolism of protein in the body, whereas zinc (an antioxidant nutrient) supports the Immune System, skin health, enzyme activity and detoxification
Hemp seeds are a small, but mighty seed! As a source of plant-based protein, they are a complete source of protein (containing all 8 essential amino acids - the building blocks of protein)
Raw, unpasteurized honey is a natural (unrefined) sweetener possessing anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-microbial properties
Cinnamon contains the mineral chromium; chromium is a key nutrient that supports regulation of blood sugar (seek out true cinnamon for the nutrient benefits - Ceylon cinnamon)
Slippery elm bark powder also has a wide range of benefits, including: supporting the reduction of inflammation in the body, skin health, aiding indigestion (is soothing and cleansing for the digestive tract), reducing blood pressure and increasing blood flow[i]
